Adsorptive behaviors of humic acid onto freshly prepared hydrous manganese dioxides

摘要: This study focused on the adsorptive behaviors of humic acid onto freshly prepared hydrous MnO(s) (δMnO), and investigated the feasibility of employing δMnO for humic acid removal from drinking water. Effects of such parameters as molecular mass of humic acid, kinds of divalent cations on adsorptive behaviors and possible mechanisms involved were investigated. This study indicated that humic acid with higher molecular mass exhibited more tendency of adsorbing onto &MnO than that with lower molecular mass. Ca facilitated more humic acid adsorption than Mg; UV-Vis spectra analysis indicated higher capabilities of Ca coordinating with acidic functional groups of humic acid than that of Mg. Additionally, ζ potential characterization indicated that Ca showed higher potential of increasing ζ potential of &MnO than Mg. Ca of 1.0 mmol/L increased ζ potential of δMnO

Synthesis, characterization and fluorescence quenching of conjugated polymer containing triphenylamine group

摘要: Poly(triphenylamine--phenylenevinylene)s with two different end-groups were obtained through a Wittig polycondensation. The structures of two copolymers were characterized. Ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra show the end-capped polymer emits intensive green light in both solution and film state. Their applications in the detection of nitro compounds were investigated, and the results show high fluorescence quenching sensitivity of the end-capped polymer towards -nitrotoluene (-NT). When the concentration of -NT was 21.5 × 10 mol/L, the fluorescence quenching reached 96%. Additionally, after the exposure of polymer film in three different quenchers such as dinitrotoluene (DNT), -nitrobenzoquinone (-BQ) and -nitrotoluene (-NT) for 600 s, its fluorescence quenching reached 93.6%, 11.5% and 77.9%, respectively. This kind of polymer has great advantages in preparation and may find applications in the detection of nitro explosives.

Synthesis of a new iron (III) porphyrin acrylate-styrene copolymer and its catalysis for hydroxylation of cyclohexane

摘要: A new iron (III) porphyrin acrylate-styrene copolymer, P[(PorFe)A-S], was synthesized by the reaction of iron (III) porphyrin acrylate with styrene and characterized by UV-Vis, Infrared spectra (IR), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP) and molecular weight determination. Its catalytic activity in the hydroxylation of cyclohexane for model cytochrome P450 in the P[(PorFe)A-S]-O ascrobate-thiosalicylic acid system has been studied. It was found that the P[(PorFe)A-S] has a higher catalytic activity than non-supported iron (III) porphyrin and its high catalytic activity remained in reuse. The catalytic activity of P[(PorFe)A-S] was discussed in the view of the microenvironment of iron (III) porphyrin. It is proposed that the atalytic activity of the P[(PorFe)A-S] may be further enhanced by construction of a homophase catalytic system containing the iron (III) porphyrin acrylate-styrene copolymer.

Effects of humic acid fractions with different polarities on photodegradation of 2,4-D in aqueous environments

摘要: Four fractions (A, B, C, and D) of humic acids (HAs) were separated based on the polarity from weak to strong. UV-vis absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis show that the fractions C and D possessed more aromatic C=C content. The influences of HAs and their fractions on the photolysis were investigated by the photodegradation of 2,4-D solutions under simulated solar light irradiation. The degradation rate of 2,4-D was found to decrease in the presence of bulk HAs or their fractions especially at high HAs concentration. The fractions of strong polarity C and D retarded the degradation rate more than the fractions of weak polarity A and B. This could be attributed to the different absorption intensity of the four HAs fractions in the order of D ≥ C > A > B, and the stronger ?-? electron donor-acceptor interactions between the strong polar fractions and 2,4-D.

Identification of faults through wavelet transform vis-à-vis fast Fourier transform of noisy vibration

摘要:

Fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings requires efficient signal processing techniques. For this purpose, the performances of envelope detection with fast Fourier transform (FFT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) of vibration signals produced from a bearing with defects on inner race and rolling element, have been examined at low signal to noise ratio. Both simulated and experimental signals from identical bearings have been considered for the purpose of analysis. The bearings have been modeled as spring-mass-dashpot systems and the simulated signals have been obtained considering transfer functions for the bearing systems subjected to impulsive loads due to the defects. Frequency B spline wavelets have been applied for CWT and a discussion on wavelet selection has been presented for better effectiveness. Results show that use of CWT with the proposed wavelets overcomes the short coming of FFT while processing a noisy vibration signals for defect detection of bearings.

Development of a seismic design method based on response spectra for building structures

摘要: The assumption and problem of the mode-superposition response spectrum method in seismic design code is discussed based on a brief review of the development of the seismic design method for building structures. The scope of application for the classical damping theory is analyzed and the necessity of the research on mode-superposition method for non-classical damping is presented. The progresses on the mode superposition response spectrum theory are discussed. This includes: 1) the complex mode superposition method (in real form) for the non-classically damped linear system and the general calculation formula for the application of code; 2) the complex complete quadratic combination (CCQC) method for the non-classically damped linear system, which is based on the same assumptions as in deducing the complete quadratic combination (CQC) method which is popularly used in seismic design codes of many countries; 3) the complex complete quadratic combination with three components (CCQC3) method, which is a generalization of the CCQC method to the case of multi-components and multiple-support seismic excitations and deducing corresponding method; 4) the approach for calculation of seismic response of the non-classically damped system with overcritical damping and the calculation method of seismic response for the linear system with multiple eigenvalues; 5) the time-dependent CCQC (t) algorithm considering nonstationary earthquake ground motion; 6) an applied and effective method to solve the low order complex vector basis for the large linear non-classically damped system, which can be expediently used in practice to avoid the unknown errors coming from the forced uncoupling method; 7) bringing forward the concept of partial quadratic combination in order to reduce the calculation amount of CQC and CCQC methods, and studying the primary estimation-criterion. The reasonability and applicable scope of these methods are also briefly discussed in this paper.

摘要: The combination of low-dose ozone with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation should be an option to give benefit to disinfection and reduce drawbacks of UV and ozone disinfection. However, less is known about the disinfection performance of UV and ozone (UV/ozone) coexposure and sequential UV-followed-by-ozone (UV-ozone) and ozone-followed-by-UV (ozone-UV) exposures. In this study, inactivation of and bacteriophage MS2 by UV, ozone, UV/ozone coexposure, and sequential UV-ozone and ozone-UV exposures was investigated and compared. Synergistic effects of 0.5–0.9 log kill on inactivation, including increases in the rate and efficiency, were observed after the UV/ozone coexposure at ozone concentrations as low as 0.05 mg·L in ultrapure water. The coexposure with 0.02-mg·L ozone did not enhance the inactivation but repressed photoreactivation. Little enhancement on inactivation was found after the sequential UV-ozone or ozone-UV exposures. The synergistic effect on MS2 inactivation was less significant after the UV/ozone coexposure, and more significant after the sequential ozone-UV and UV-ozone exposures, which was 0.2 log kill for the former and 0.8 log kill for the latter two processes, at ozone dose of 0.1 mg·L and UV dose of 8.55 mJ·cm in ultrapure water. The synergistic effects on disinfection were also observed in tap water. These results show that the combination of UV and low-dose ozone is a promising technology for securing microbiological quality of water.

Droplet spectra and high-speed wind tunnel evaluation of air induction nozzles

A series of air induction nozzles were tested in a high-speed wind tunnel. Droplet size spectra were measured for four air induction nozzles (IDK-120-01, IDK-120-02, IDK-120-03 and IDK-120-04) each at three spray pressures (0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 MPa) and seven different air velocities (121.7, 153.4, 185.5, 218.4, 253.5, 277.5 and 305.5 km·h ). The measurement distance (0.15, 0.25 and 0.35 m) from the nozzle orifice was found to be important for the atomization of the droplets. The response surface method was used to analyze the experimental data. The results indicated that v and v of the droplets decreased quasi-linearly with increased wind speed, while v was affected by the quadratic of wind speed. v , v and v of the droplets were all proportional to the orifice size, and were not markedly influenced by the spray pressure. The percentage of the spray volume consisting of droplets with a diameter below 100 mm (%<100 mm) was found to be quadratically related to wind speed, and was not markedly influenced by the spray pressure and orifice size. However, the effect of the orifice size on the %<200 mm could not be ignored.

Decomposition of aqueous chlorinated contaminants by UV irradiation with H

摘要: In the present study, the decomposition rates of carbon tetrachloride (CCl ) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in water by the ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation alone and H O /UV were experimentally investigated. The detailed experimental studies have been conducted for examining treatment capacities of the two different ultraviolet light sources (low and medium pressure Hg arc) in H O /UV processes. The low or medium UV lamp alone resulted in a 60%–90% decomposition of 2,4-DCP while a slight addition of H O resulted in a drastic enhancement of the 2,4-DCP decomposition rate. The decomposition rate of 2,4-DCP with the medium pressure UV lamp alone was about 3–6 times greater than the low pressure UV lamp alone. In the direct photolysis of aqueous CCl , the medium pressure UV lamp had advantage over the low pressure UV lamp because the molar extinction coefficient of CCl at shorter wavelength (210–220 nm) is about 20 to 50 times higher than that at 254 nm. However, adding H O to the medium pressure UV lamp system rendered a negative oxidation rate because H O acted as a UV absorber being competitive with CCl due to negligible reaction between CCl and OH radicals. The results from the present study indicated significant influence of the photochemical properties of the target contaminants on the photochemical treatment characteristics for designing cost-effective UV-based degradation of toxic contaminants.

Photolysis and photooxidation of typical gaseous VOCs by UV Irradiation: Removal performance and mechanisms

摘要: Photodegradation by ultraviolet irradiation (UV) is increasingly applied in volatile organic compound (VOC) and odor gas treatments. In this study, 27 typical VOCs, including 11 hydrocarbons and 16 hydrocarbon derivatives, at 150–200 ppm in air and nitrogen gas were treated by a laboratory-scale UV reactor with 185/254 nm irradiation to systematically investigate their removal and conversion by UV irradiation. For the tested 27 VOCs, the VOC removal efficiencies in air were within the range of 13%–97% (with an average of 80%) at a retention time of 53 s, which showed a moderate positive correlation with the molecular weight of the VOCs ( = 0.53). The respective contributions of photolysis and photooxidation to VOC removal were identified for each VOC. According to the CO results, the mineralization rate of the tested VOCs was within the range of 9%–90%, with an average of 41% and were negatively correlated to the molecular weight ( = 0.63). Many of the tested VOCs exhibited high concentration particulate matters in the off-gases with a 3–283 mg/m PM range and a 2–40 mg/m PM range. The carbon balance of each VOC during UV irradiation was analyzed based on the VOC, CO and PM concentrations. Certain organic intermediates and 23–218 ppm ozone were also identified in the off-gases. Although the UV technique exhibited a high VOC removal efficiency, its drawbacks, specifically low mineralization, particulate matters production, and ozone emission, must be considered prior to its application in VOC gas treatments.

Effects of water quality on the coagulation performances of humic acids irradiated with UV light

摘要: The presence of humic acid in drinking water treatment has received significant attention in recent years because of its adverse effects on the removal of many pollutants in coagulation. In this paper, the effects of water quality including pH, turbidity, alkalinity, and hardness on the removal of humic acid were investigated in a UV light hybridized coagulation process. Our results suggested that UV light radiation could effectively improve the removal rate of humic acid in coagulation under both neutral and basic conditions, and the variations of the selected water quality parameters had little adverse effect on the function of UV light. After UV light radiation, the removal rate of the nitro-humic acid (NHA) increased from 20% to 60% in coagulation, and increased further to 75% and 85% for the raw waters with 10.0 NTU kaolin and 100 mg·L hardness, respectively. In addition to NHA, the removal rates of the humic acid extracted from peat coal (PHA) and the humic acid provided by Japan metals and chemicals company (JHA) in coagulation were also improved, both in the range of 80%–90% after undergoing UV light radiation. By changing the radiation location from prior to coagulation to the flocculation process, similar experimental results were obtained. The formation of positive charged sites after UV light radiation was considered to be the primary factor that led to an enhanced removal of the humic acid in coagulation.
